Two “Can We Talk? Arizona” Workshop Series and web-based courses for Parents and
Caregivers
Two workshop series and web-based courses provide an opportunity for parents and
caregivers
to discuss with their children the goals of keeping healthy and safe. The workshops use proven strategies to get young people talking about their challenges, questions, concerns, and successes. Online youth surveys let parents see what their child knows about a particular topic and which areas need special attention. The workshop series
are designed for
the parents of pre-teens. Topics addressed include:
- health and safety
- medically accurate information
about sexuality and health
- alcohol, tobacco, and drugs
- conflict and
violence
- family values
- Internet safety and mixed messages in the
media
- self worth and emotional health
- health and nutrition
- eating disorders
- the body machine (fuel and energy)

THE "TOUGH ISSUES; SMART CHOICES" COURSE SERIES
Course 1:
Can We Talk About Self-Worth and Emotional Health?
How is your kid feeling?
Hopeful or hopeless? Empowered to succeed or
depressed? Parents play a huge role in how their
children feel and
effective parent-child communication is key in creating
nurturing
households. This workshop illustrates the problems kids are facing
every day, and
how parents can talk with their children about emotional health.
Course 2: Can We Talk About Sex, Relationships and Responsibilities?
Yes, sex is on your kids’ minds. And that’s normal. But all kids
have
lots of questions and need their parents to talk with them about this
complex issue. Parents
are competing against the messages that come
from TV, film and the Internet. So, it’s time
for parents to take the
lead. This workshop illustrates how parents can talk with their
children
about sexuality, health, and relationships. Special focus is
placed on the promotion of healthy
relationships and the prevention of
teen pregnancy, STDs/HIV, and abusive relationships.
Course 3: Can We Talk About Internet Safety and Media Messages?
Yes, your child is on-line chatting online with friends, strangers, and
companies seeking to
sell them everything from jeans to prescription
drugs. Is your child ready to say no to fraud,
intimidation,
cyberbullying, and credit card scams? This workshop illustrates how
parents
can talk with their children about using the Internet (and the
doorway to a billion people) safely and
smartly. We focus on how the
Internet can be a positive tool when used thoughtfully.
Course 4: Can We Talk About Bullies, Conflict, and Respect?
How is your child dealing with conflict? Is your child a victim or a
bully? We know that
all children witness all types of bullying and harassment. This workshop illustrates how parents and
children can
discuss bullying and violence prevention and take the lead in
preventing violence at
home, school, and in the neighborhood. The
workshop provides a forum for parents to learn how to
help their child
deal with conflict, and how schools and parents can work together to
create a
bullyproof and harassment-free community.
Course 5: Can We Talk About
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs?
Drugs are everywhere—from online drug
stores, to the medicine cabinet,
to the Friday night party down the street. This workshop
illustrates
how parents and children can talk about the prevention of alcohol abuse and
illegal drug use. The
workshops provide a forum for parents to discuss their
concerns about legal and illegal drug use, as
well as strategies for
successfully addressing issues like addiction and recovery.
